Deerfield Academy is located in the western part of Massachusetts. Sasaki was commissioned to design the new ice arena and field house connecting to the existing sports facility. The scope work of landscape service is to provide access to the north and south entrances of the new complex. This project is particularly challenging as the new building is not only located in the 100-year flood plain, but also on the edge of a steep hill, adjacent to an existing cemetery. These constraints have made designing for service access and ADA access difficult. Eventually, we were able to fulfill requirements for compensatory storage, provide emergency vehicle access and elegant access solutions using local materials and plant species.
